Shara Rutberg

Shara Rutberg has been helping people tell their stories for 15 years both as a communication strategist at marketing agencies and as a journalist whose work has appeared everywhere from Fortune Small Business and CNNMoney.com to Bike and Powder. She excels at discovering the essence of a brand or campaign, analyzing it and potential audiences and using that insight to fuel powerful communications strategies. Her time in the field – and the conference room - has honed her ability to connect with diverse audiences. For stories, she’s hunkered down with press-shy ranchers in rural Colorado, Domino’s pizza bike-riding deliverymen in Harlem, relatives of murder victims and mutton-busting 6-year-olds. For clients, including many transportation and health non-profits, she’s gleaned information and sparked new ideas among subjects including tobacco-addicted pregnant women, irate bus passengers and helmet-resistant Harley riders. She’s created everything from company websites and communications plans to blogs, broadcast spots and rap lyrics for singing vegetables as part of a program designed to coax preschoolers to try new foods. Most recently, she’s deepened her knowledge about sustainable products, consumers and trends as senior editor at The Natural Foods Merchandiser magazine. Shara holds an MS from The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, a BA from Northwestern University and a PhDewar’s from the legendary whisky manufacturer, a degree she earned working on their Dewar’s Profiles ad campaign. She lives in Boulder, Colorado with her boogerhound, Mordechai the Magnificent and her horse, Puppy.
